JDRF offers a wealth of information about managing diabetes and living well day to day. We also offer information on our critical advances in diabetes research.JDRF School Advisory Toolkit
Students with type 1 diabetes need a strong support network at school to help them properly manage their type 1 diabetes on a daily basis. Cultivating strong relationships with school teachers, nurses, and administrators is key.  JDRF has developed this resource to support and empower families as they communicate with school personnel throughout the year. Being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as an adult can be difficult. There is a lack of understanding about diabetes in the community and people often do not expect an adult to be diagnosed with type 1.  Adults already have responsibilities and tasks that need to be performed each day and a diagnosis of diabetes is like starting a journey on a road that is new and unfamiliar. It is not chosen and not wanted. JDRF has created the type 1 adult toolkit to be a resource and support network in the journey with type 1 as an adult. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International is the leading charitable funder and advocate of type 1 diabetes research worldwide. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.

Research Funding Facts
Since it’s founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.5 billion to diabetes research, including more than $107 million in FY10.  More than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and research-related education. In FY10, the Foundation funded more than 1,000 centers, grants, and fellowships in 19 countries, including nearly 40 human clinical trials.

General Diabetes Facts
Diabetes is a chronic, debilitating disease affecting every organ system.  There are two major types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes (an autoimmune disease also known as juvenile diabetes) and type 2 diabetes (a metabolic disorder also known as adult onset diabetes).

Type 1 Diabetes Facts
Type 1 diabetes strikes children suddenly, makes them dependent on injected or pumped insulin for life, and carries the constant threat of devastating complications. While diagnosis most often occurs in childhood and adolescence, it can and does strike adults as well.
